15 day Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing & Kenyan Safari

Climb the highest mountain on the African continent and then treat yourself to a Kenyan safari! A great active African trip!

Day 1 ( Nairobi – Arusha)
You’ll be picked up at the airport by a driver who will take you to the Kenyan/ Tanzanian border. On the other side of the border you will be collected by a driver from our partner organisation in Tanzania who arranged your mt. Kilimanjaro safari. The driver will take you to your hotel, The Outpost Lodge in Arusha, where you can relax before the big climb begins.

Day 2 (Arusha – Mandara hut)
After breakfast at your hotel in the morning you will meet the crew and have a quick briefing and introduction then afterwards you will drive to Marangu gate( 1.30hrs from Arusha). After registration you will start your trek through fascinating rain forest and arrive at the hut later in the day.

Day 3 (Mandara hut – Horombo hut)
After breakfast, follow the ascending path through the alpine – meadow. The altitude begins to change and slowdown your pace while enjoying the flora and the view of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at the Horombo Hut which is located 12km from Mandara hut. Meals and overnight at the hut.
Day 4 (Horombo hut – Kibo hut)
After breakfast, resume the climb, the landscape becomes rugged and rocky. Lobelias begin to appear. Climb to Kibo Hut. Meals and overnight at the hut.

Day 5 (Kibo hut – Uhuru peak – Horombo hut)
The beginning of the last ascent is made in the wee hrs of the morning while the scree is still frozen. Climb the very steep part of the route to Gilmans point (most difficult and tiring part). Uhuru peak is reached within an hour’s walk along the crater rim. Start the walk along the craters rim. Start the descent to Horombo hut for overnight.

Day 6 (Horombo hut – Arusha)
After breakfast, continue your descent to Marangu National Park. There you will be handed a certificate when you have achieved the summit successfuly. Then you are taken to your hotel in Arusha where you can recover from the climb.

Day 7 (Mt Kilimanjaro – Tsavo West)
Early in the morning you will be brought by a driver of the Tanzanian tour operator to the border town Holili. This place is on the border of Kenya and Tanzania. On the Kenyan side of the border we, from Nakupendakenya, will be waiting for you so we can start your Kenyan safari. You will drive to Tsavo West National Park. Back in the day Tsavo used to be one big park, but because of the construction of the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway it was divided into Tsavo East and West. Today you will visit the west part of the park, which is known as “the home of the leopards”. The landscape is dense and hilly, making it a little more difficult to spot the animals. However, nature is breathtakingly beautiful here.
Once you have entered the park you will start with your enroute game drive towards your lodge. Around lunch hours you will arrive at the lodge, where you will check in and sit down for a lovely lunch. After lunch you will have little bit of time to relax.
Later in the afternoon you will head back into the park for your evening game drive, which will last for about 2 hours. Try you luck this afternoon and spot as many animals as you can. When the sun starts to set it is time to head back to the lunch for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8 (Tsavo West)
Enjoy an early breakfast and check out of the lodge. After you have checked out of the lodge you will have a morning game drive towards Mzima springs where you will have a 1 km walk accompanied by a ranger/guide, who will brief you about the attraction. Millions of gallons of water sprout out of rock forming springs and big pools of water, where hippos and crocodiles call this place “home”. After Mzima springs you will continue your game drive towards your lodge. Once you are back at the lodge you can relax and use the hotel facilities until it is time for you evening game drive at around 16:00hrs. After about two hours you will head back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9 (Tsavo West – Amboseli)
After an early breakfast you will check out and head to Amboseli National park. The last park you will visit during this safari. Amboseli National Park, formerly Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, is located in the Kajiado County. The park has little vegetation due to long dry months, it also houses swamps and a dried-up Pleistocene lake. The park is famous for viewing free-ranging elephants up close and of course for the spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world. Amboseli is home to many animals, including elephants, buffaloes, lions, cheetahs, impalas, hyenas, zebras, wildebeests and giraffes.
Around lunchtime you will arrive at your lodge, where you will check in and sit down for a lovely lunch. After lunch you will have the opportunity to relax a bit. At 16:00hrs you will head into the park for your first evening game drive. Try you luck and spot at many animals as you can. When the sun starts to set it is time to head back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 10 (Amboseli)
Another early morning today. You will head out into the park at 06:00hrs for your morning game drive. Animals are more active in the morning hours so your chances of spotting the wildlife are a bit better in the early morning. Try and find that one animal that is still on your bucket list. Around 08:00hrs you will start making you way back to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast you can relax and use the hotel facilities.
At 16:00hrs it is time for your two hours evening game drive. And if you are lucky mt. Kilimanjaro will show her lovely face this evening, which will guarantee beautiful pictures. Afterwards you will head back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11 (Amboseli – Lake Naivasha)
Have an early breakfast and afterwards check out of the hotel. Then you will start your long drive to Lake Naivasha. This is the highest located lake in Africa and is located in the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley. It is a freshwater lake, while the remaining lakes in the eastern branch are strongly alkaline.
At lunch you will arrive at your hotel where you will check in and enjoy a delicious lunch. After lunch you can relax and enjoy the facilities the hotel has to offer.
Later in the afternoon it is time to take a boat trip on the lake, giving you the opportunity to spot hippos. There are also many birds to see on Lake Naivasha. After the boat trip you return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 12 (Lake Naivasha – Masai Mara)
Wake up early today and have an early breakfast. You will check out of the lodge at 07:30hrs and start making your way to the world famous Masai Mara. The park is located in Narok county and is adjacent to another world famous park, the Serengeti located in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is known for one of the world’s largest natural phenomena. The Great Migration of Wildebeest and Zebras. This is an annual recurring event where the wildebeests and zebras migrate from the Serengeti to the Mara in search of food. During the migration they encounter many dangerous obstacles including rivers filled with hungry crocodiles.
At lunchtime you will arrive at your lodge where you will check in and sit down for a delicious lunch. After lunch you will have the opportunity to relax and use hotel facilities. Later in the afternoon you will head out into the park for your evening game drive. Search for the wildlife and enjoy the beautiful nature that this park has to offer. When the sun starts to set, it’s time to go back to your lodge for dinner.

Day 13 (Masai Mara)
After breakfast you will leave for an full day game drive. The whole day will be dedicated to spotting the Big five. In addition, you can also enjoy the beautiful savannah scenery that this park has to offer. When it’s time for lunch, you’ll find a nice place for a picnic in the middle of the park. After lunch you will continue your game drive. At 15:00hrs you will drive back to your lodge where you can rest a bit after this intensive safari day. Relax before you will sit down dinner.

Day 14 (Masai Mara – Nairobi)
Another early breakfast today. After breakfast you will check out and head into the park for your last game drive in the Mara. After the game drive you will drive towards the exit of the park. Once you have left the park you will head back to Nairobi. Along the way you will have a stop somewhere where you can stretch your legs and enjoy a lovely lunch. Later in the afternoon you will be dropped at your hotel.

Day 15 (Nairobi)
Depending on your flight time, you will be picked at your hotel and taken to the airport. Your Kenyan adventure has come to an end and it’s time to return home. Bon Voyage!
